The Vitra Organic Highback Chair is a comfortable reading chair and was designed in 1940. Formally speaking it was ahead of its time, but owing to the lack of manufacturing techniques, never went into series production.
It was not until after 1950 that it became possible to manufacture larger quantities of organically shaped seat shells and market them.
Material: Laminated seat shell, polyurethane foam, Kvadrat Tonus Fabric upholstery, black beech legs
Charles & Ray Eames are one of modern design's most recognisable partnerships. Born in the early part of the 20th Century Charles and Ray Eames married in 1941 and moved to Los Angeles, where together they began experimenting with techniques for the three-dimensional moulding of plywood. The aim was to create comfortable chairs that were affordable.
Playful and fun, the Eames' had a great energy that lives through their iconic products today. "Take your pleasure seriously" was a favourite saying of Charles Eames.
